5Works great to get rid of rustJul 20, 2010
By Stephen M. Charme
I have used naval jelly for years to get rid of rust. It chemically dissolves the rust and turns the rusted surface a dark brown.

I have also used Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer, which also works very well (and I have reviewed it on Amazon), so let me explain how I decide when to use one rather than the other.

The Rust Reformer sprays on just like black paint. That works great, for example, when spraying my car's rusted trailer hitch receiver, which was black when new, and looks new again after being sprayed with the Rust Reformer. Using naval jelly would make the receiver look multi-colored--black where there was no rust, and dark brown where the naval jelly dissolved rust.

On the other hand, I have patio lounge chairs with white painted frames and beach chairs with aluminum frames where naval jelly is perfect to use because I can wipe the excess off the surrounding area without discoloring the frames.

Although this naval jelly comes in a sprayer, you can unscrew the top and apply it with a paint brush. For some applications that may be preferable, such as a vertical surface where you don't want gel dripping down.

Update February 27, 2011: I recently discovered VHT rust convertor on Amazon (and have reviewed it), which is a liquid that sprays on clear and converts rust the same as naval jelly. Sometimes I find it more convenient to use a liquid spray rather than a gel (like on my patio and beach chairs), while other times I don't want a spray dripping all over the place and use naval jelly (like on my boat engine). Both products work fine. It's just a matter of personal preference.

5Works great!Oct 06, 2010
By T.BONE
I used this on the vertical walls of an enclosed trailer. It stuck to the aluminum walls and took the rust off after I sprayed away the jelly with a regular water hose. The rust stains were from a rusty sprinkler system that sprayed the trailer for 2 summers, took it right off. The bottle is not very large and it took me two to get one 10' section but it did the trick.

I would recommend this product and will buy again!...just not from this website as it's much cheaper at the large hardware/garden/do-it-all places or your local auto parts store.

3Not a "silver bullet" solutionJun 06, 2011
By Angelo Mandato "Angelo"
I was hoping this would be the "silver bullet" solution for removing rust in all situations. Unfortunately, it's only marginally better than other home remedies. Though this item will take off rust, it appears to only work well for surface type rust off items like silverware or porcelain.

I've had just as much luck using home recipes. Do a search for "rust removal with Borax" or "rust removal with white vinegar". This Naval Jelly works a little better than those recipes, but neither are solutions for deep pitted rust.

1Not worth to even tryNov 28, 2011

I used this product according to instructions on the label to remove rust stains from a metal shower rail & did not work at all, I do not recommend anybody to buy it !

5Great To Remove Rust From Clothing!!!Oct 29, 2011
By SSS
I always keep this item on hand because it's the only thing I've ever found that removes rust from everything, including clothing! I have used it for years on just about every fabric to get rust out and it works EVERY TIME without damaging the material.
